Why Pick a Timber Bed With Sprung Slats?

by Elsa Jarvela

If you've decided to buy a new wooden bed base, then you can choose from a solid base or one with slats. These slats are often fixed into place; however, you can also get beds with sprung slats if you prefer.

What are sprung slats, and what are the advantages?

How Do Sprung Slats Work?

Traditional wooden fixed bed slats go flat across the whole of the bed. For extra support, they have a holding bar in the middle. The whole-of-base coverage and the support bar create a firm base for your mattress.

Sprung slats work a little differently. In a double bed, you get two sets of slats — one on each side of the bed. They are also connected by a central bar. However, rather than lying flat, these slats have a slight upward curve in their middle. This gives a less rigid support when you lie on the bed.

What Are the Advantages of Sprung Slat Beds?

The curves in sprung slats make them more responsive to movement. Unlike fixed slats which don't move when you do, sprung slats work a little more like bed springs. Their curves depress slightly when you lie on them. This gives you more gentle support in bed. If you can't sleep on a totally hard frame, sprung slats will support your weight evenly and reduce pressure on your body when you lie down. Even though your mattress does most of the cushioning work in bed, sprung slats acts as an extra cushion. So, you may get a more comfortable night's sleep.

You can also use different slats to get the firmness you want in your timber bed base. Thinner slats are more flexible, so they suit sleepers who like a softer bed. If you want extra firmness, choose thicker slats. These move less so provide harder support.

Sprung slats can also give your mattress some added protection. On a fixed base, your mattress depresses down when you lie on it. However, it stays flat on the base. On sprung slats, the mattress depresses but the slats move with it. This may support your mattress more and stop it from flattening out.

To see examples of sprung slat timber beds, pop into local bed stores or look at online bedroom furniture sites. If you want a timber bed base with a little more flexibility, then these slats are a good way to go.
