When you shop for furniture, you have to think about everything. Do you often have guests who perch on the arms of chairs at parties? Do your kids flip over the backs of sofas? 2 Essentials When Creating A Dream Bed For Your Bedroom

by Elsa Jarvela

It's a sad fact that when it comes to interior design, bedrooms are often neglected in favour of more public rooms of the home. When you consider that around a third of your life is spent in bed sleeping, then it makes sense to spend a bit of time and effort making your bedroom the haven it should be.

Your bedroom furniture plays a huge role in that. And your bed itself should be a comfortable, cosy nest within your bedroom haven. Here are the two most important factors to consider when you're planning a dream bed for your bedroom.

1. A cushioned headboard

Headboards make an important style statement in your bedroom, but they can also contribute a lot to the comfort levels too. Hard, solid headboards can feel uncomfortable when you're propped up enjoying a book or some Netflix, and they can cause you some pain if you accidentally bang your head during the night. A cushioned headboard is a far more comfortable option.

If the idea of a cushioned headboard is one of a gauche and dated velvet model straight out of the 1970s, don't despair. Modern fashions are stylish, beautiful and come in a wide range of fabrics, shapes and looks. You can opt for a simple version in a neutral or be a bit more adventurous with a more ornate floral- or geometric-patterned fabric.

2. A good-quality mattress

Mattresses are well worth spending money on for a good quality model. Unlike sofas or dining tables, your bed mattress won't be admired by guests or make a difference to the style of the room, but it will reward you with a comfortable and sound night's sleep and a healthy spine if you invest in the right one.

This doesn't mean that you need to spend thousands of dollars on a top of the range version. Most mid-range models made by reputable manufacturers will provide all the support and comfort you need. It's worth researching the different types of mattresses, the levels of firmness and orthopaedic support each one provides. Don't be shy about physically testing them all out when you visit a showroom. You'll have a mattress for many years, so take the time to choose one you actually love.

Once you have these two essentials figured out, then the only thing left to do is to add your bed linen. Again, it's wise to spend a little extra on good quality linen that will feel much softer and more pleasant on your skin and will last a lot longer than budget options.
