When you shop for furniture, you have to think about everything. Do you often have guests who perch on the arms of chairs at parties? Do your kids flip over the backs of sofas? Five Tips for Updating the Doors of Your Kitchen Cabinets

by Elsa Jarvela

If you are tired of your kitchen cabinets and want to give them an update, there are several different things you can do to their doors. From the simple to the elaborate, here is a look at five cabinet door updates or ideas. Explore these tips and find inspiration for the new look of your kitchen:

1. Replace the hardware.

The hardware is a small part of most cabinets, but putting in new pulls or other hardware can make a surprising update to your kitchen. Simply, remove the existing hardware and replace it with hardware in a different design.

If you don't have hardware on your cabinets, you can easily add it. Simply, drill a small hole where you want to add the new knobs or pulls, and then slot them in and tighten them.

2. Paint the cabinet doors.

In lieu of or in addition to replacing the hardware on your cabinets, consider painting them. To prevent the paint from getting on the hinges or on the rest of the cabinet, remove the doors. Sand them slightly to ensure the paint will stick, and then paint them.

As you are not painting the whole cabinet, be sure to pick a colour that will complement the rest of the cabinets and paint the inside and outside of the door for a seamless look.

3. Add contact paper to the cabinets.

If you want to update your cabinet doors without removing them or dealing with paint, consider putting contact paper on them. If you have felt cabinet doors, cut the contact paper to cover the entire door, and if you like, wrap it around the edges of the door or around the inside of the door to create a seamless look.

Alternatively, if you have cabinet doors with panels, cut the contact paper to fit inside each panel and then apply it. With this approach, you have the wood of your cabinet door framing small decorative pieces of contact paper, and that creates a compelling visual effect.

4. Remove the doors permanently.

Instead of doing a project with your doors, consider removing them permanently. This creates an open shelving look which can be fun. Alternatively, paint or cover some of the cabinet doors and remove the rest to create a more versatile look in your kitchen.

5. Work with a cabinet maker.

Instead of updating your cabinet doors on your own, consider contacting a cabinet maker. Cabinet makers can help you update the doors, add new doors, or work with you to redesign completely new cabinets for your kitchen.
