Shopping for Furniture: A Blog of Tips, Deals and Advice

When you shop for furniture, you have to think about everything. Do you often have guests who perch on the arms of chairs at parties? Do your kids flip over the backs of sofas? Are you prone to spilling on your furniture and need a stain-resistant fabric? Your life and your style goals matter a lot in the process. However, there are also objective ways to save money and ensure quality. Hi, my name is Allie, and I love shopping, decorating, writing and creating a fun but functional home for my family. In my furniture blog, I want to combine it all, and I hope these posts help you.

Not Just for the Outdoors: Have You Ever Considered Concrete Furniture?

by Elsa Jarvela

When it comes to the best materials for furniture and fixtures, you wouldn't necessarily think that concrete would be a suitable candidate. Okay, so you're not exactly going to buy a concrete bed, but with certain types of furniture and fixtures, concrete can be a great choice. Its durability and austere beauty can result in a product that manages to be highly unique and yet also rather neutral. So what are some items that really work when it comes to concrete furniture?

For Indoors: Kitchen Countertops

Concrete is actually a fairly logical choice when it comes to kitchen countertops. You would have a real job on your hands to do any damage to its surface, and it will conceivably outlast the rest of your home. While it is possible to install concrete kitchen countertops yourself, it requires a precise, professional touch to achieve the desired finish. Stores that specialise in concrete furniture and fixtures will be able to take care of the installation, and there are a huge range of colours on offer.

For Outdoors: A Couch or Bench

The concrete bench is hardly a revolutionary idea, and chances are you'll find one in your local park. It's surprising that more people don't use this simple idea in their own backyards. A concrete bench is a long-lasting piece of outdoor furniture that requires practically no maintenance. If you want something a little different for your backyard, there is also the option of a concrete couch. If you go with the latter choice, you'll probably need to keep a few cushions handy.

For Indoors: Kitchen or Bathroom Sink

A concrete kitchen or bathroom sink makes for a truly interesting looking bathroom. The neutrality of the concrete means it works no matter how the rest of your bathroom might be decorated. To complete the look, you can even have concrete taps. Since it will be in regular contact with running water, a concrete sink will need to be sealed. You can expect to need to reseal it every 10 years or so, but you can also expect that the sink will still look the same as the day it was installed.

For Indoors or Outdoors: An Armchair

A concrete armchair will certainly work as outdoor seating, but there are so many beautiful different types of concrete armchair on offer that you might want to keep it indoors. Choose wisely, since of course it's not going to be easy to move if you change your mind!

Nobody will ever claim that concrete furniture is the most cost-effective manner in which to add beauty to your home. And yet when it comes to durability and its unique aesthetic appeal, concrete is a fantastic way to go.
